Where damage happens around Barton Seagrave
Barton Seagrave sits beside two busy roads, the A14 and the A6, and the A14 carries a lot of freight traffic. Most of the damaged cars we buy from here come from:
- Collisions on main roads and junctions.
- Low-speed bumps in car parks and on estate roads.
- Cars hit while parked on the street.
- Insurance write-offs that the owner kept as a buy-back.
- Water damage after heavy rain.
On fire damage we keep things general. If your car has been in a fire, call us and we will talk it through.
Write-off categories in plain English
| Category | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Cat A | The whole car must be crushed |
| Cat B | Body shell must be crushed, some parts can be salvaged |
| Cat S | Structural damage, can be repaired and go back on the road |
| Cat N | Non-structural damage, can be repaired |
Kept a Cat S or Cat N car from your insurer and now regret it? You can still sell it to us. The same goes for Cat B buy-backs.
Repair it or sell it?
After an accident, the repair quote often makes the decision for you. If it costs more than the car will be worth once fixed, selling it as scrap is usually sensible. Our scrap or repair guide goes through how to decide.
How we price damaged cars
Scrap is priced per tonne, so weight and the current scrap metal market come first. Make and model matter, and so does completeness. A car with front-end damage but its engine, gearbox, catalytic converter and wheels intact still has plenty going for it. Keys and the V5C help. Describe the damage when you get your price. If the car is different on the day, we explain before loading and you can say no. See our damaged cars cost guide for more.
Collecting a car that can't be driven
Damaged cars often cannot steer, roll or be driven onto a trailer. We collect with trucks from our sister company, Rapid Recovery Corby, using winches, dollies and skates when the wheels will not turn. We can collect from your drive, the roadside or a garage that has been holding the car.
Paperwork after an accident
- Photo ID and proof of address, which we must check by law.
- The V5C if you have it. Keep the yellow slip.
- If your insurer has the V5C or it is lost, we can still buy with ID and proof of ownership.
- Remove your dashcam first, as it may hold footage you need.
- Cancel the insurance once the car has gone.
The car goes to a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility. It issues a Certificate of Destruction and tells the DVLA. Our certificate of destruction guide explains why you should keep it.
Bank transfer only
The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 made cash payments for scrap cars illegal. We pay by bank transfer at collection.
Waiting on the insurer
If your claim is still being settled, it is usually best to let that finish before you sell. Once you know the car is yours to keep, you are free to sell it to us. If the car is being held at a garage or storage site in the meantime, tell us where it is and we can collect from there.
A note on dashcam footage
Footage from a dashcam can matter if there is any dispute about the accident. Take the camera and memory card out of the car before we collect, and keep them somewhere safe until your claim is closed.
Keeping your private plate
If the car has a personalised plate, transfer or retain it with the DVLA before collection. Once the car has been scrapped, the plate is lost.
